You Will Not Go Astray
It was rare that Hakkyuu dreamt vividly, and when he did they tended to be flashes of unplaceable memories and feelings made into image. He rarely had dreams like visions or something narrative or some version of himself facing a deep desire or fear and more like shattered shards of that didn't fit together.
That night, many broken pieces of dreams trickled down through his mind like heavy rain—flashes of snowy mountains and crimson dashes mercilessly on white; rough grey and blue waves peaked with foam like wolves' teeth exposed from rolled back chops; pristine expressions that he could see just enough of a sliver underneath to know it was a mask; a woman screaming; a boy who was just barely stepped beyond his grasp to topple over a cliff toward spear-like rocks below; a fire in a desert that cast light and shadow over a steady, hunched over figure producing a soft, rosy glow; the sound of sea gulls; something sharp like glass, yet harder, bursting out from--
Hakkyuu didn't wake with a start that sent him sitting bolt upright. Instead his eyes shudderedwide open to stare directly ahead entirely unfocused for several long seconds.
It took a while for his mind to clear the fog away and for the memories of the previous day to catch up with him, but when they do it drove him to push himself up, turning around around sharply to sweep his eyes around and try to locate Kell, as if afraid that their reunion was some cruel dream itself.
